The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) was established more than 20 years ago with a mission to transform the way buildings are designed, constructed and operated. Everyday USGBC is facilitating advance domiciles that are environment friendly and healthy to reside. USGBC is undertaking the market transformation through its LEED green building program. Now USGBC has endeavored to bring green homes to India in accordance with it’s certification body Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), by unifying with Real estate firm Tata Housing Development Company. This strategic partnership is intended to kick start the availability of LEED and WELL certified homes all over the country and is dedicated to certify 20 million square feet of dwelling space as per the LEED green building program and the WELL building standard.

Tata Housing Development Company which is one of India’s leading real estate development is looking forward to invest Rs 500 crore to build its first wellness-themed green homes in Mumbai’s Thane area, as per a top company executive. The project is named Serein, and would be stretched across 1 million square feet and would have four towers with 740 flats. It would embrace two, three and four Bedroom flats with dimension ranging from 696 square feet to 900 square feet. Prices are expected to begin from Rs 1.65 crore.

Mr. Brotin Banerjee, managing director and chief executive officer, Tata Housing, disclosed that in partnership with USGBC they are intended to expand to more projects in Bengaluru where the company is gearing up to launch a 190 acre township and also in its residential project in Colombo. The company is willing to develop a total of 20 million square feet of their residential projects for the next 3-4 years in partnership with USGBC.

Mahesh Ramanujam, COO, USGBC and President, GBCI, said that residential division in India can have dominant role in boosting resource efficiency in the years to come. The USGBC-GBCI-Tata partnership will directly impact the residential division by employing LEED in houses scheduled for construction. LEED is the most extensively used certification program for homes and buildings that are directed in reducing energy, water and resource use. LEED buildings are healthier for the dwellers as it not only saves money through reduced utility bills but also reduces CO2 emanations.
