The concept of the smart city has been quite the puff in recent times. Since then cities, as well as government officials, have shown keen interest upon the topic. The necessity of a refined environment has interested everyone.

Keeping up on the growing interest on development of smart cities, as required under the mission guidelines, each individual city formulated a vision statement.

Smart city plan for 95 cities received in the Ministry of Urban Development encountered some unconventional statements in the form of vision statements from city representatives. This included varying topics ranged from attainment of clean and green to becoming a multi-functional tribal hub.

As reported by times of India, “The press statement issued by the union urban development ministry states that a perusal of Smart City Plans of 50 cities revealed that 11 cities aimed at emerging as clean, green and sustainable cities followed by 9 cities seeking to leverage rich cultural heritage legacy for stimulating development, 8 cities stating economic growth and development upfront as the core of their vision and the rest seeking to emerge as tourism hubs, port cities, education and health hubs, industrial and institutional centres etc., taking advantage of unique features and strengths of respective cities.

The actualization of economic independence, bettering the quality of life and achieving urbanization are some of the basic chattels each city wants to achieve their vision statement.

Each of the Mission Cities formulated City Vision Statement based on citizen buzz sessions.

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in its vision statement stated to their willingness to emerge as a benchmark globally for a capital city. While Aligarh vowed becoming an economically spirited and eco-friendly smart city adhering to the conservation conserving heritage and culture through communal harmony and renewable urban infrastructure.

Along with big cities, small cities too came in the forefront. Dahod, a small city in the state of Gujarat, yearned to become influential as ‘Dynamic Dahod’, and urged their wish to set up a multi-functional activity hub for tribals. Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) wants to explore by setting up a healthy metropolis while Warangal in neighbouring Telangana is keen to emerge as economically independent hub besides supporting green as a whole.

Varied in opinion, the universal goal is same for every state which is attainment of sustainable living, enhancing urbanization and to become economically independent. Differing in vision, mission remains the same for each city.
